E-mobility – Pedelecs, e-bikes & Co.
Pedelecs (pedal electric cycles) are counted among the bicycles which means that neither an approval registration, nor a licence number, nor a driver’s licence is required for driving. Different to a common bike, pedelecs are equipped with an electric motor, a rechargeable battery, motor control electronics as well as sensors detecting the crank movement. The electric motor assists the pedalling movement up to a speed of 25 km/h. Optionally, there are models with additional start-up assistance up to 6 km/h.
In the legal sense, pedelecs are subject to the machinery and EMC directive. This implies that the company placing the pedelec on the market has to label it with the CE mark and provide an EC declaration of conformity.
If the battery charger is supplied along with the pedelec, additionally, conformity with the low voltage directive has to be confirmed.
E-bikes and fast pedelecs are subject to the type approval directive. For those vehicles the manufacturer has to apply for a type approval with the German Motor Vehicle and Transport Authority (KBA).
We test your pedelecs and e-bikes as well as their battery chargers for electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility. Tests for mechanical safety of pedelecs are performed by our cooperation partner velotech.de in Schweinfurt. For the batteries we provide tests according to UN-T as well as IEC/EN 62133. In case of a positive test result, a CE certificate of conformity or a GS certificate can be issued.
