Extension of SLG’s DAkkS accreditation in the field of chemical analytics and amended PAH limits for GS marking

Our DAkkS accreditation has been extended by new testing services in the field of chemical analytics.

Our new services include:

  • Determination of elements by ICP-OES
  • Determination of phthalates (plasticizers in plastics)
  • Chemical analytics for toys according to U.S. standards (ASTM, CPSC)

Amended PAH limit values for GS marking

The European REACH Regulation (EG 1907/2006) determines the permissible amount of eight specific PAH in plastics and rubber. For materials with prolonged skin contact a new limit value of 1 mg/kg applies, toys and products for babies and small children may contain no more than 0.5 mg/kg. These new limit values enter into force on December 27th, 2015.

For the voluntary German safety mark GS so far the limit values determined in document ZEK 01.4-08 apply. Due to new scientific findings and amended legal regulations these limit values have been revised and determined in document AfPS GS 2014:01 PAK, which becomes mandatory by July 1st, 2015.

Important changes at a glance:

  • All toys intended for skin contact and with prolonged skin contact were added to category 1.
  • Limit values of PAH in categories 2 and 3 were lowered.
  • The limit value for naphthalene and eight other PAH in category 1 was increased (background: These PAH are volatile and can originate from non-controllable contaminations of other sources).
  • The migration test for products with a PAH content between the limit values of categories 1 and 2 is no longer required.
